Love you Grandma.

La Brea Tar Pits

The statues are made of fiber glass so that they are less dense than the naturally occurring asphalt.  They are also chained to the edge of the surface.  I had to ask.  It seemed like they should have been sinking.

Carter chose a mammoth skeleton smashed penny.

Carter really preferred looking at the moving furry saber cat
attacking the bear
to the plastic-looking cat family.

Yep.  Almost 3ft. tall!
This is where they actually clean the bones they extract from the tar on site.

Saber-toothed tiger skeleton

There are microOrganisms living within the tar!  They are hoping that they can use these mighty micros to cure diseases!

Giant Condor skeleton

Mammoth (one of many found on site)

My hand next to the mammoth sized foot print!

The pelvis below looked HUGE.  It is a sloth.
I didn't know how large they were.

The fan structure on this buffalo was wild.
It was really hard to pull this pipe out of the tar.

Here's an active pit.  Everywhere there's a flag, there are bones located!
The next two pictures are of the "Observation Pit".

Below is Pit 91.  They were digging in plots here this day.
NEW! Just popped out of the ground, new tar locations!
This is what they refer to as the "Mammoth Pit".  Several mammoths were pulled from this pit.
